Sergei Kan Speaks in Alaska for Native American Heritage Month

Professor Kan was in Juneau and Sitka to speak about his latest book "The Tlingit in Sitka: The Photographs of Elbridge W. Merrill," as well as his decades of scholarship on Tlingit culture.

In November, Professor Sergei Kan traveled to Alaska to deliver a series of talks about his most recent book, "The Tlingit in Sitka: The Photographs of Elbridge W. Merrill," as well as about his decades of research on Tlingit culture.

In Juneau, Professor Kan participated in the Sealaska Heritage Institute's lecture series honoring Native American Heritage Month, where he spoke about his new book on the work of photographer Elbridge W. Merrill.  Merrill's photographs serve as an important historical and ethnographic record of daily life among the Tlingit.  Professor Kan also discussed his work with his Tlingit teachers and colleagues to identify the many people and places that Merrill photographed.

Professor Kan presented the book again in Sitka at the Sitka National Historical Park's lecture series as part of Native American Heritage Month.  He also spoke about his book "Memory Eternal: Tlingit Culture and Russian Orthodox Christianity Through Two Centuries" at the Russian Bishop's House as part of the Orthodox Southeast Deanery of the Diocese of Alaska conference, also in Sitka.
